To commemorate October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the City of El Monte is hosting a drive for purses and toiletries that will go to domestic violence survivors who have recently escaped abuse.
At its regular meeting on Sept. 23, the El Monte City Council proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and gave a commendation to representatives from SPIRITT Family Services who assist families experiencing domestic violence. SPIRITT also provides vital social services that include counseling, mental health, support groups, family activities and non-violent relationship enrichment support. In addition to the proclamation, the City is also hosting a purse drive with the proceeds going to SPIRITT and its program for domestic violence survivors.
Survivors in the program are also in need of toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap and razors.
Those who wish to donate purses and toiletries can drop off their donations at El Monte City Hall, 11333 Valley Blvd. or SPIRITT Family Services, 2000 Tyler Ave., South El Monte.
