On Sunday, March 15, at approximately 11:30 p.m. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Altadena Mountain Rescue Team (AMRT) received a call of two lost hikers above Altadena, in the Angeles National Forest. AMRT searched the area of Rubio Canyon, locating the hikers’ vehicle parked alongside the hiking trail on Rubio Vista Road.
The hikers, a young couple in their early 20s, set out in the early afternoon to see the waterfall with their family dog “Cheerios” in Rubio Canyon, in the Angeles National Forest. After darkness fell, the couple lost sight of the trail and became lost. AMRT responded into Rubio Canyon and began to yell out for the couple as AMRT simultaneously hiked through the trail in search of them. Within an hour, the stranded couple heard AMRT members’ calling out for them and quickly answered, “We’re stuck up here!”
AMRT quickly continued to hike along the Incline Trail to reach the couple and at approximately 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, the couple and their dog “Cheerios” were found uninjured.
AMRT members then escorted the grateful couple and their family dog “Cheerios” out to safety where they were reunited with their families.
Search and Rescue Team members are Reserve Sheriff’s deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff’s civilian volunteers who volunteer for free. There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. These rescuers were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation. Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff’s deputies. http://lasdreserve.org http://AMRT.org.
