Lights, Cameras …Homeland Security Action

An eagle-eyed motorist noticed some new cameras recently installed on the traffic signals at Myrtle and Chestnut and was concerned that Big Brother was encroaching on our rights. Monrovia Police Chief Hunt called us back just before we went to press to tell us the cameras are, in fact, license plate readers part of a 2013 Homeland Security grant . The cameras ( four in Monrovia) are part of the Gold Line corridor and will be placed in or around other main roads leading to and from the new light rail stations. The cameras, which have not yet been activated, will alert dispatch centers of stolen vehicles or other major incidents involving automobiles, allowing deputies in the field to follow up.
