Celebrating Spirits of the Deceased
All are welcome to join Live Oak Memorial Park in celebrating their 9th Annual Dia de los Muertos, a rich tradition in the Hispanic community that honors the dead through festivities, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at the cemetery, located at 200 East Duarte Road in Monrovia.
Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is not an ordinary celebration. Rooted in rich Hispanic culture, Dia de los Muertos practices honor, love and passion for loved ones. In this celebration, families build altars to welcome the spirits of deceased loved ones. The altar is decorated with candles, fresh fruits, incense, marigolds, photos of departed loved ones and most importantly, sugar skulls with the departed loved one’s name on the forehead, which represents the return of the spirit. The event will include the following visuals:
“Each year, we aim is to keep the tradition of Dia de los Muertos alive in the community,” said Lorraine Valdez, general manager at Live Oak Memorial Park. “It’s a great way for families to celebrate the loved ones they’ve lost.”
