Favorite Bill Berry Will Cue Line Dancing at Nov. 14 BBQ Bash Fundraiser
From Hesperia’s Blue Jay Squares to the Temecula Grape Stompers, square dance clubs across the Southland know and love Bill Berry, square dance caller extraordinaire.
Next Saturday night, Nov. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m., Berry’s boots will walk into a new spotlight as he calls line dancing at the Stompin’ “Raise the Roof” Fundraiser at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 122 S. California Ave. at Foothill in Monrovia. Part of the proceeds from the event will help fund the replacement of the historic church’s roof, an increasingly urgent need as El Niño approaches.
Those who think line dancing went out with the ‘80s and Footloose have not been paying attention. It is not only a staple at Western nightclubs, but a part of many fitness classes because it is a fun workout. In fact, Berry and St. Luke’s came together because of a line dancing class at the Duarte Community Center – one that church altar guild member, Jeannett Armstrong, attends and Berry cues. It inspired the theme for the church fundraiser, which Armstrong is co-chairing with parishioner Michael Grey. Entertainment will also include singer Pam Kaye and the Tap Chicks, guitar and vocal duets, banjo music and a ukulele band.
Tickets to the event, which includes a BBQ supper and cash bar, are $25 per person. They are available at the church office during business hours or at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2426373 (for a small handling fee).
