A 71-year-old man was strangled in Compton early this morning, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

On Saturday night, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified him as Jimmie Paredes.

Deputies and county fire department personnel responded at 12:50 a.m. to a call of a person down in the area of South Gibson Avenue and East Rose Street and located the victim, according to sheriff’s Deputy Michelle Sanchez.

The victim — whose name will be released pending notification of kin – – was pronounced dead at the scene, Sanchez said.

A motive for the strangling or description of a suspect were not available.

The incident was initially reported as a stabbing investigation, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
