CA Dept. of Justice investigating fatal Tustin officer-involved shooting

On Tuesday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the California Department of Justice is investigating and will be independently reviewing an officer-involved shooting (OIS) in the City of Tustin Monday morning.

Tustin Police Department (TPD) responded to a call on Monday of a suspicious man at a mobile home park known as Saddleback Mobilodge at 15401 Williams Ave., near Main Street, at approximately 10:05 a.m.

According to Sgt. Matt Nunley, the man was hiding in bushes when deputies arrived. Once seen, the man escaped the bushes and began advancing toward the officers with some sort of object in hand, which resulted in the man being shot and killed by an officer.

The officers administered first aid to the wounded man until paramedics arrived and took him to a hospital, where he died. The man’s name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Following notification by TPD, the Department of Justice’s Police Shooting Investigation Team for Southern California deployed to the scene of the OIS.

Under AB 1506, the Department is persuaded to immediately begin the investigation process. Once the investigation is complete, the incident will be turned over to DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Crime Law Division.
