Long Beach felon gets 10 years for shooting into parked car

A Long Beach man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in federal prison for possessing two firearms and ammunition after shooting one of those weapons into a car parked outside of his ex-girlfriend’s home.

Jazzmon Unique Russell, 35, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner after being convicted by a jury in September 2021 of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Early in the morning of July 5, 2017, a Long Beach resident called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend, Russell, had fired two shots outside of her home. When police arrived, they arrested Russell as he was fleeing the scene of the shooting, and they found two firearms, including one containing discharged rounds, inside of his car.

Witnesses later told law enforcement that Russell had been harassing the victim all week and threatening her just minutes before the shooting. After his arrest, Russell fled until he was arrested on unrelated gun charges several years later in Pomona.

Before his arrest, Russell had been convicted of several felony drug and gun offenses.

Russell’s “extensive laundry list of criminal convictions shows his wanton disregard for the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum filed in Los Angeles federal court.

The memo stated that Russell was “quickly becoming more aggressive and brazen in both using guns and committing more serious crimes.”
